Back in 2019, I began my journey into online writing, not quite knowing where it would lead me.
My writing habit was born in the quiet aisles of local libraries; I spent countless hours immersed in books, letting the words inspire my own.
Since those early days, I've published over 1,000 articles under my name and become a top writer on Medium with millions of readers.
I've had the privilege of coaching more than 100 writers and seeing my work featured in some of the world's biggest publications.
All of this growth stemmed from following an effective and productive writing routine.
I call it "ordinary" because once you sync with it, writing becomes as natural and effortless as chatting with a friend.
I'm excited to share this routine with you, hoping it might make your own writing journey a bit easier and a lot more enjoyable.
Start
My day often kicks off with a trip to one of the local libraries—the very places that helped build my writing habit back in 2019.
There's something comforting about the quiet hush of a library, the scent of books both old and new, and the endless stories waiting on the shelves.
Wandering through the aisles, I let my curiosity guide me. Sometimes I discover a fascinating nonfiction topic; other times, I get lost in a novel's world.
These morning visits aren't just about finding ideas—they recharge my creativity. The library's peaceful atmosphere helps me clear my mind and get inspired for the day ahead.
Plus, stumbling upon unexpected books often sparks fresh perspectives that weave their way into my writing. This simple routine keeps my passion for storytelling alive and sets a positive tone for the rest of the day.
Deep Work
After my inspiring start at the library, I usually settle into my writing space by 9:00 AM. Mornings are when my mind feels the freshest, so I dedicate this time to deep, focused work.
I've found that having a consistent schedule not only boosts my productivity but also trains my mind to enter "writing mode" more easily each day.
Between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM, I immerse myself in writing. Whether I'm drafting new articles, editing pieces, or brainstorming ideas, this three-hour block is sacred.
To keep my focus sharp, I follow a simple rhythm:
Work intently for 50 minutes: I dive deep without interruptions.
Break for 10 minutes: I stand up, stretch, grab a healthy snack, or step outside for a breath of fresh air.
These short breaks are vital—they prevent burnout and keep my creativity flowing.
It's incredible how stepping away for just a few minutes can lead to fresh insights when I return.
A few personal tips that make a difference:
Craft a comfortable workspace: I ensure my chair is supportive and my desk is at the right height. A comfortable environment helps me write longer without discomfort.
Minimize distractions: I silence my phone and close unnecessary tabs on my computer. This helps me stay immersed in my work.
Set clear goals: Before I start, I jot down what I aim to accomplish in this session. Having specific targets keeps me on track.
Stay hydrated: I keep a water bottle within reach. Sipping water regularly keeps me refreshed and alert.
This routine might seem ordinary, but it's been incredibly effective for me.
By structuring my mornings this way, I've been able to produce a steady stream of work without feeling overwhelmed.
It's a balance of discipline and self-care that makes writing both productive and enjoyable.
Consistency
"Consistency turns ordinary actions into extraordinary achievements."
You might wonder how an "ordinary" routine can lead to extraordinary results. The truth is, it's not about having a perfect plan—it's about showing up consistently.
Over the years, I've learned that writing every day, even when I don't feel particularly inspired, keeps the momentum going and the ideas flowing.
Why consistency matters:
Momentum: Writing regularly trains your mind to generate ideas more effortlessly.
Skill over time: Just like any other craft, the more you practice, the better you become.
Overcomes perfectionism: Waiting for the "perfect" idea or moment often leads to procrastination. Consistency helps you push past that.
How I stay consistent:
Set realistic goals: I aim to write a certain number of words or complete specific tasks each day.
Create a ritual: Simple actions like brewing a cup of tea before writing can signal your brain that it's time to focus.
Track progress: Keeping a journal of my daily achievements motivates me to stay on track.
By prioritizing consistency over perfection, I've been able to produce a significant body of work and grow a dedicated readership.
It's a humble approach, but it's incredibly powerful.
Bottom line
Over the years, I've realized that achieving success in writing isn't about waiting for a stroke of genius or relying on fleeting inspiration.
It's the result of combining simple, everyday actions with a deep-seated passion for the craft. To sum up this approach, I've distilled it into a formula:
Writing Success = (Consistency × Effective Routine × Time) + Passion
This means that by consistently following an effective routine over time—and fueling it with genuine passion—you set yourself on a clear path to success.
By sticking to my routine day in and day out, I've been able to produce a vast array of work without feeling burnt out.
It's not about the number of hours you put in, but the quality and consistency of those hours. Passion acts as the catalyst, making the process enjoyable rather than a chore.
Remember, extraordinary results often come from ordinary actions performed with dedication and heart.
I hope this formula inspires you to create a writing routine that not only fits seamlessly into your life but also propels you toward your own definition of success.
Thanks for reading! I hope you found some value in it.
See you next week!
